Teachers Threaten Not To Resume New Session.

The Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) has threatened not to resume the new 2012/2013 academic session in September, if the Federal Government does not implement the 27.5 percent Teachers Peculiar Allowance.

Speaking at a meeting with the Minister of Education, Ruqayyatu Rufai, the president of the NUT, Michael Olukoya said that the government had reneged on its promise since the 6th of August 2008, when the matter was resolved.

The NUT president also raised other issues including the long-standing dispute between the NUT and the National Teachers Institute (NTI).

The teachers accused the NTI of short-changing them through the 2011 Millennium Development Goals training programme organised nationwide.

The Minister of Education admitted that there were several lapses from the Federal Government and promised to address issues of welfare packages to prevent a breakdown in the nation’s education system.
