Five-star Messi shines brightest as Barca dazzle

Lionel Messi scored five goals as Champions League holders Barcelona destroyed unfortunate Bayer Leverkusen to confirm their place in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Barca had been understated but superior in the first leg in Germany, winning 3-1, and were expected to ease through in yesterday’s  return match.

Pep Guardiola was full of praise for star striker Lionel Messi after he became the first player to score five goals in a Champions League game in the 7-1 thrashing of Bayer Leverkusen. “It’s not easy to score five goals in a single game and that’s coming from someone who scored 11 in his entire career. If he wants to, he’ll score six one day. I have to also say that [Andres] Iniesta played magnificently too.
