2Face and D’banj Clinch BET Awards 2011

Hosted by funnyman Kevin Hart, the glittering 2011 BET Awards ceremony recorded yet another milestone for Nigerian music as our very own 2Face Idibia and Mr. Endowed, D’Banj claimed the trophies for Best International Act (Africa) in a tie.

This category in which the Nigerian stars outshone their counterparts across Africa has D-Black (Ghana), Fally Ipupa (DR Congo), Angelique Kidjo (Benin) and Teargas (South Africa) as nominees. The award was aired from Los Angeles on the BET cable channel on Sunday, June 26, 2011 after nominees were announced in April.

Meanwhile, leading the nominee pack this year was Chris Brown, who was up for Best Male R&B Artist, Best Collaboration, Viewer Choice, Video of the Year, and Best Actor for his role in the thriller “Takers.” Up for five awards was Lil Wayne, followed by Kanye West, Rihanna, and Drake with four nods each.

BET Awards 2011 also honoured Patti LaBelle with the Lifetime Achievement Award and Steve Harvey with the Humanitarian Award.

Again, D’banj and 2Face have re-echoed their zeal to remain at the centre stage of contemporary music in Africa and an international recognition like this shows the impact of Nigerian music on the rest of the world. Congratulations dudes!
